Some people have high cholesterol simply due to their genetic makeup. I have had high cholesterol and nothing I did would reduce it. I could eat well and work out and my cholesterol would remain high. I talked to my doctor about taking medication and my cholesterol has been lowered. Some people will just have to have medication to control this problem. Talk to your doctor and see what they say.

my “overweight or obese” friend…?

i have a friend who’s roughly about 6’0 but weighs 223 lbs. He used to weigh 280. It’s not muscle, he’s just chunky/fat. For me simply being overweight (5’11 at 190lbs) has given me so much health trouble but for him, he claims he is perfectly healthy through his bloodwork results. Now for me I have recently lost weight back to my healthy ideal while he’s still obese. I’d like to ask how is it possible to be that fat and have a perfectly healthy bloodwork (good cholesterol and liver) but for me just being overweight has given me fatty liver with inflammation and just bad health. He thinks he’s invincible, that he’ll never get diseases from his obesity because he’s perfectly fine now at 26…is that true? Can being fat put you at risk for disease in the future even though you’re fine now? Why is it that he can be fat and be “fine” as he claims but I can’t?
To Jaide: my inflammed liver is most likely caused by fat infiltration, simply just too much fat in it. If you look in the BMI 190 at 5’10-5’11 is only 1-2 points from obese but its high end of overweight. My cholesterol and triglycerides are high because of high fat intake and lack of exercise, It seems my problems are just as bad as a person that is obese. So it IS overweight. So yes my weight has contributed to my fatty liver / inflammation. Please re-educate yourself on personal health

Useful answers:

Your friend is in denial. With out knowing what his body fat % is it’s hard to say what his risk factor is. If his body fat is 20% or higher now at only 26 it will do nothing except increase as time goes by. Regardless of how he feels or what his blood work says a person can not be “healthy” and have a high percentage of body fat. More than likely he lost weight very rapidly which always causes a great loss of muscle mass. Based on statistical data I would put his body fat at close to 30% which is no where near healthy.

My own experience has been that college math was harder.

The main reason was that my high school math teachers were trained educators with many years’ experience getting their subject matter across to the students. Anyone who made a real effort could eventually understand it.

On the other hand, most of my college math courses were taught by graduate assistants or by neophyte instructors, who had never studied any subjects pertaining to education or teaching. They knew their subjects, but were not very good at explaining anything that wasn’t already in the textbook.

“Cholesterol is a molecule that is found in cells. It is a type of lipid which is a fat or fat-like molecule.” –Simple Wikipedia

Having a high cholesterol means that you have a high count of cholesterol in the bloodstream, which may lead to things like heart disease and stroke. I recommend that you should listen to your doctor and stay on that diet. Don’t cheat, not even once until the doctor says it’s okay. Cheating on diets is just as addicting as cigarettes are.

Having high cholesterol doesn’t mean that you are fat, it just means that you have eaten too much “fatty” foods.

Edit: It depends on what your doctor gives you. I’d recommend fat-free foods, reduced fat foods, or fruits & vegetables if you don’t mind eating like a rabbit. If you have an “urge” to eat fat foods, they normally do sell fat foods as “reduced-fat” or “baked.” They taste just like the original fat foods and are healthy, too.

Could someone please explain to me how a high blood pressure flowing in arteries can speed up or make plaque build up in your arteries? This isn’t making sense to me. I thought it had more to do with lipids/cholesterol…

Useful answers:

Oh oh I know this, the higher pressure of blood, the more damage you will get to your arteries, it’s like a river, the faster it flows, the more it erodes the river bank. So it erodes the arteries and instead of a smooth artery, it gets kinda sharp and easy for the plaque to get stuck on, and it will keep on building

This small dose of Aspirin thins the blood and keeps platelets (involved in clotting mechanism) from clumping. Thus, your blood circulation through smaller blood vessels improves.

The only time you should be wary of taking this small dose of aspirin is if you are prone to strokes or have a history of strokes in your family. Even then, a talk with your doctor is necessary to weigh the obvious benefits of the aspirin against the possible risk of stroke in your individual case.

What are the implications for agriculture? How do people test for GMO’s in food? What role has the company Monsanto played in GMOs? How do other organizations (Greenpeace, etc.) think about GMO’s? What do you think of GMO’s? Is there controversy with GMO’s?

What exactly is biological predisposition and how can I write about it?

Hi! I’m writing a paper for my biology class. (I’m a junior in high school, by the way.) The teacher didn’t give me a topic or a specific way to write it.
Anyway, I’m kind of interested in biological predisposition–at least I think that’s what it is. I’ve read several articles about the connections between genes/what’s inherited and mental disorders. I think it’s interesting and I have a few questions.

1.) Is that the concept of biological predisposition? That some people are wired to be more vulnerable to disorders than others? (If a kid’s mother had an eating disorder/OCD/depression, the kid is more vulnerable to get it. It isn’t guaranteed.)

2.) How can I make that into a paper? Can I just write a few paragraphs about my research? (Describe it, give examples, etc.)

Thanks so much.

I feel slightly embarrassed asking for this somewhat basic information.
Yes, biological predisposition refers to genetic factors – predisposition would refer to all factors involved before birth (and any environmental factors, etc.).

My idea for a paper : talk about how biological predisposition can be THE main or a major determining factor in a disease/disorder (bipolar disorder), and then cases where biological predisposition is not the main determining factor (obesity in most indivudals).

I always recommend Niacin starting at 100mg’s and working towards 300-500mg’s daily. (Use the flushing niacin , not the time release or ‘no flush’.) Niacin is also known as ‘vitamin b3′.

Co-Q-10 can, after some months have a positive effect on your cholesterol levels, as well as Fish oil.

I would recommend the following:

Eat any oatmeal you can ‘stand’ every morning. (Instant is fine).

Take the following supplements daily:

Niacin, Co-Q-10, and a 2:1 fish oil supplement. (The ratio is EPA/DHA). You can find all of this at your local grocery/pharmacy.

If the Co-Q-10 is too pricey, stick with the niacin and fish oil. (AND oatmeal).

I guarantee if you do all of those, plus add 20-30minutes of cardiovascular exercise 5days a week your cholesterol will improve immediately, and should improve considerably over 3-6months.

It is the combined effect of the exercise and the aforementioned supplements and grain/oats that will produce this effect.

In your case in might be just enough to keep you off medicine. It is alot easier to just take the statin, but if you are persistent and REALLY do all of what is recommended you should be able to improve it substantially.

Occasionally we have genetic predisposition to our livers producing faulty levels of cholesterol combined with poor diet (and lack of exercise, etc) — that just simply has to be controlled via a Statin drug.. Or we suffer the consequences of prolonged high cholesterol which is definitely co-morbid.

In medical terminology, what does BUN level mean?

I got a letter from my doctor saying my cholesterol/triglycerides are too high, my thyroid is abnormal, and my BUN level is too high–and I need to make an appointment with them for further treatment.

I would really like to know what “BUN” means.

Useful answers:

BUN stands for Blood Urea Nitrogen. It is a measure of kidney function.
The blood urea nitrogen (BUN) test is a test of how well your kidneys are working. It measures the amount of nitrogen in your blood. The nitrogen is present in a chemical called urea. Urea is a waste product produced as your body digests protein. Urea is carried by the blood to the kidneys, which filter the urea out of the blood and into the urine.
BUN is usually measured to see how well your kidneys are working. Kidney disease often makes it hard for the kidneys to filter as much urea as they should. This causes high levels of urea in the blood. This test is also done if you are having kidney dialysis to see how well the dialysis is working.

This test may be used with another test called the creatinine test to see if you are dehydrated.

Some medicines are processed by the kidneys or can cause kidney damage as a side effect. The BUN test may be done to be sure you have normal kidney function before you start taking these medicines.

What does the test result mean?
The normal range for BUN is 7 to 20 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). The normal range may vary slightly from lab to lab. Normal ranges are usually shown next to your results in the lab report.

Your BUN level may be higher than normal because:

Your kidneys aren’t working well.
You have low levels of fluid in your body (you are dehydrated).
You’ve been eating a high-protein diet.
You are bleeding into your stomach (from an ulcer, for example).
You have heart failure or you’ve had a heart attack.
You are in shock.
Your urinary tract is blocked (for instance, from an enlarged prostate in men or from a kidney stone or tumor).
Some medicines can cause BUN to be higher than normal, such as:

allopurinol
some antibiotics (aminoglycosides, cephalosporins, rifampin)
furosemide
guanethidine
indomethacin
methotrexate
methyldopa
spironolactone
thiazide diuretics
triamterene
any other drug that damages the kidney.
Your BUN level may be lower than normal because:

Your liver isn’t working well.
You’ve been eating a low-protein diet.
You’ve been malnourished.
You’ve been drinking a lot of fluids.
What if my test result is not normal?
Test results are only one part of a larger picture that takes into account your medical history and current health. Sometimes a test needs to be repeated to check the first result. Talk to your heath care provider about your result and ask questions.

If your test result is not normal, ask your health care provider:

if you need additional tests
what you can do to work toward a normal value
when you need to be tested again.

Cholesterol is purely about the bad things in your diet (assuming you don’t have a family history of it in which case there will also be a genetic factor you need to make allowance for), it’s not necessary to be overweight at all. There are many products out now to help lower cholesterol a little, like benecol and various others with plant sterols (chemicals which affect your cholesterol). I believe the best way is to eat a healthy diet and start an exercise program. We have both good and bad cholesterol, like we have bad and good fats, the fact you’ve been told you have high cholesterol means you have too much of the bad kind. The good kind is needed by the body, it keeps your cells working as they should and your veins and arteries flexible for good blood flow. The bad kind results in deposits in your arteries&veins leading to higher blood pressure and possible blockages. The real issue, is the ratio of good to bad cholesterol. There are many things which increase/decrease your good cholesterol, and increase/decrease you bad cholesterol. Salt, saturated fat and trans fats increase the bad kind, so lowering these will improve your health. Also, good fats like monounsaturated and polyunsaturated will both increase the good and decrease the bad cholesterol. Good fats are in extra virgin olive oil, oily fish (salmon, mackerel, kippers, fresh tuna not tinned), flax seed, avocados. Eating good whole grain foods, whole wheat foods, those high in fibre, will decrease bad cholesterol. Things like brown breads that say they have whole grain, porridge oats, pasta. Green veg is also high in fibre. If you look at what the advice is to cut cholesterol, they’re basically telling you to eat less convenience premade packaged food, fried food and more natural and good foods, fruit and veg and grains. One more great source of fibre are beans, lentils, pulses. The great thing about the fact that all the best things to eat are also natural things is that your health will go through the roof. You’ll look and feel much better, and be getting the nutrients you need, the things we were supposed to eat and have evolved to eat and be dependant on.

As for exercise, weightlifting is the way to go. The benefits have been show on a widescale. Don’t worry, you won’t become huge overnight. The freaks you see are usually on drugs and have done it for decades. As well as adding to your frame, it brings many health benefits like improved immune system strength, stronger bones, better blood circulation, lowered bad cholesterol, increased metabolism, better digestion. Cardio is also no problem, for fitness, but the positive effects of training with resistance goes far beyond cardio, and will add size to your frame.

I would watch your cheese intake as that’s high in saturated fat, and perhaps switch to skimmed milk if you drink any significant amount. 1pint full fat has around 40g fat. Join a website forum for fitness/weight training/bodybuilding/ powerlifting they have many people interested in the subject that have done it for years that have a wealth on knowledge, advice and experience to offer plans for diet, nutrition and exercise ideas routines. You should start looking at the info on the back of everything you eat and drink and look out for those things I mentioned. As a general rule, you want your good fats to be much higher than your saturateds, and your salt needs to be low, under 5g a day. You will be surprised just how much salt is in food, and watch out for sodium content. 1g sodium is 3-4g salt.

Consistent Vomiting after drinking more than 1/4 cp of liquids at a time?

I have no other symptoms. No fever, diarreah, nothing. If I eat solids foods in small quantities I am fine, it’s whenever I drink liquid I vomit instatntaneously. I consume and within 2 minutes after consumption it comes right back up along with al lthe food… I have never been a vomiter, even when I have the worse flu… I did have some pain in my lower back (flank) a couple days ago, but it subsided within a few hrs. It has been going on now 24 hrs and I am completely fine unless I drink something… Can anyone help me to figure this out?> I fear I will get dehydrated and this will get worse. I cannot get in to see the dr until next wed.. I am type 2 diabetic (and do not take meds as prescribed….) but haeve checked my bg’s and they are normal… I was also diagnosed with high cholesterol but also do not take meds as prescribed… I also get severe bloody noses after each vomiting spell through both nostrils… they stop immediately after the session ends… no pinching, they just stop. But recently I have been getting bloddy noses in the middle of the night every other day for the past couple weeks… I’m worried and since I cannot get in to the dr soon, I just WAS HOPING FOR SOME FEEDBACK OF SOME SORT….

Medical question….?

Im having bad dizziness and sometimes nausea along with pain on my forehead and back of my head. I went to the doctor, she couldn’t figure it out for now. Blood tests were done and only high cholesterol came out. She said there was a little fluid in my ear but other wise didn’t give me any other medicine except mecezine. Which knocks me out. I am worried about tumors and all that. Any opinions?
blood pressure was excellent and no Im not pregnant (I’m from male species).
dizziness only when moving head, not lying down. or in a store when people are walking around me. My head just feels like its not right.

If your sight is not affected then you shouldn’t be all too concerned with tumors. Keep track of your daily symptoms in detail and find the common symptoms and when you experience these symptoms.

Look up benign intercranial hypertension – could be that.
